Frequently asked questions

Quick answers to the most common questions about booking, pricing and what to expect.

Do you charge a call-out fee? +
There's no separate call-out fee. Work is charged as time on site: £98 for the first hour, then £49 per 30 minutes thereafter. Once I attend, the first hour charge applies — but there's nothing added on top of that for simply turning up.
How do you price jobs? +
All work is priced on time and materials. Labour is £98 for the first hour, then £49 per 30 minutes after that, billed in half-hour increments. Materials are charged at cost plus 25% to cover procurement and handling. No hidden fees, no rounding up.
How do I book? +
Call and speak directly to the engineer who will be doing the work. No call centres, no chatbots, no booking portals — just a straightforward conversation about what you need. 📞 07908 794 527 · Mon–Sat 8am–6pm.
When and how do I pay? +
Payment is due in full before I leave site on completion of the work. Bank transfer or card are accepted. Cash is not accepted.
Do you do emergencies or out-of-hours work? +
Sometimes, subject to availability. If I can attend out of hours, the rate will be confirmed at the time of booking. Typical emergencies include active leaks and drains backing up — call and I'll let you know if I can help.
What areas do you cover? +
Based in Ascot, covering West Berkshire and the surrounding Surrey border area — including Bracknell, Warfield, Sunningdale, Virginia Water, and Windsor. Not sure if you're in range? Call with your postcode and I'll confirm.
Do you fit customer-supplied parts? +
Yes. Labour is chargeable as normal regardless of where the part comes from. Please note: no warranty is provided on customer-supplied items, and if a part fails, is incompatible, or is missing components, the return visit and labour are fully chargeable.
What if a part I've supplied fails after fitting? +
Warranty on parts — whether supplied by me or by you — lies with the manufacturer. If a part fails due to a manufacturing defect, the replacement part may be covered under the manufacturer's warranty, but the labour to return, remove, and reinstall is fully chargeable at standard rates. This applies to all parts including shower pumps, valves, taps, cistern mechanisms, and cartridges.
Do you work on boilers or gas appliances? +
No. Defender Plumbing carries out plumbing and drainage work only. Gas, boiler, and electrical certification work is not undertaken under any circumstances. If you need a Gas Safe engineer, I'm happy to point you in the right direction.
What if you find extra problems once work starts? +
Older plumbing can reveal hidden issues once things are opened up — seized valves, corroded pipework, concealed leaks, or previous poor workmanship that wasn't visible beforehand. If anything changes the scope of the job, I'll stop, explain exactly what I've found and what the options are, and we agree next steps before anything additional is done. No surprises on the bill.
Can you give a fixed price before starting? +
For straightforward like-for-like replacements it's sometimes possible to give a rough estimate, but most plumbing work — particularly on older properties — can't be accurately priced until the system is isolated and the work area is open. I'll always give you an honest view of how long I expect the job to take, and keep you updated if anything changes.
What is press-fit and why do you use it? +
Press-fit is a modern method of joining copper pipework using a powered crimp tool instead of solder or open flame. It's faster, cleaner, and eliminates fire risk near your walls and floors. I use RIDGID press tooling and it's my preferred method for most domestic pipework — though the best technique is always chosen based on what the job actually requires.
